Dr. Victor H. Eastmond
(Barbados)
Distinguished Service Award


Dr. Victor Eastmond first qualified as a general (diagnostic) radiographer in 1968 at the Royal Free Hospital (U. of Lon.) before starting dental school in 1970 at the Royal Dental Hospital (RDH) where he gained his BDS (Lon.) and LDSRCS (Eng). He then worked at RDH and St. George's Hospital in Maxillo-Facial Surgery for six months before moving to Edgeware General Hospital as Senior House Surgeon. Nine months after graduating, he left the hospital service to work in General Dental Practice in South London for three years. He returned to his native home, Barbados, in 1979 where he is now principal of a nine chair dental practice called Rosedale Dental Centre, which has a complement of one periodontist, four hygienists, four general dental surgeons and one technician.
In 1998 he gained his certificate in Forensic Odontology from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden and now works closely with the Barbados branch of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) when requested to assist with dental forensics in criminal or identification matters.

He is the past chairman of the Barbados Dental Council, a past President of the Barbados Dental Association, the Caribbean Atlantic Regional Dental Association and the Commonwealth Dental Association. He is the immediate past chairman of the Barbados Examination Boards for both dentists and technicians and a member of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI). Dr. Eastmond has been placing implants since 1992.

He has recently concluded a consultancy for the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAEM) to produce guidelines for accreditation for dental education within the English-speaking Caribbean. He is currently the co-chairman and programme coordinator of Caribbean Dental Programs Ltd. which is a company that plans and coordinates continuing education within the Caribbean region. He is also editor of the Postgraduate Dentist Caribbean which publishes a magazine for the profession within the Caribbean at no cost to its distribution.

Dr. Eastmond has lectured in many countries with the farthest ones being India and Malaysia and has published quite a few articles on many topics. He continues to be very active in the activities of the dental profession, of which he is proud to be a member.
