Dr. Joyous C. Pickstock
(Bahamas)
President's Award


Dr. Joyous Pickstock is a 1986 graduate of Meharry Medical College, School of Dentistry, Nashville, Tennessee. In 1994, she received her specialty training in Dental Public Health from The University of London where she obtained a Master of Science degree (MSc. Lond.).

Dr. Pickstock has been practicing dentistry for 21 years. She currently holds the post of Consultant in Public Health Dentistry within The Ministry of Health, where she has risen through the ranks as Dental Officer and Senior Dental Officer, respectively. She holds the distinction of being the first Bahamian female dentist employed within the government service and in 2002 was the youngest health professional honored as a "Health Hero" for contributions in the field of dentistry, during the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Pan American Health Organization. She was recently deployed at the Royal Bahamas Defence Force base to head the dental services division, which she was instrumental in crafting and implementing. She is also involved in private practice at Faith Dental Centre in New Providence.

Dr. Pickstock has been actively involved in organized dentistry in The Bahamas since 1986. She has held every position within The Bahamas Dental Association and currently serves as its treasurer.

In addition to her involvement in the local association, Dr. Pickstock has been directly involved in organized dentistry both regionally and internationally. Presently, she holds the position of treasurer of The Caribbean Atlantic Regional Dental Association (CARDA) and has served as its president and vice president. She currently represents The Bahamas Dental Association as National Liason Officer (NLO) of the International Dental Federation (FDI), serving in this capacity since 1995. Additionally, she has held the position of regional vice president of The Commonwealth Dental Association for over nine years, resigning from this position in December of 2006.

Her other dental affiliations include being a member of the American Dental Association, Fellow of the International College of Oral Implantologists and member of the American Academy of Public Health Dentistry.

She is the daughter of Mr. Edney and Mrs. Emma Pickstock and the mother of one daughter, Jazmyn.
