Oral Cancer

Facts:
  • Represents 3% of all cancers in the U.S.
  • There are 30,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the U.S. About 8,000 die each year.
  • In the Bahamas, 14 cases are diagnosed each year, representing 3.65% of all cancers in the Bahamas.
  • The average age of all cases found is around 57 years.
  • Males are found with oral cancer 4 times as often as females.
  • The single greatest risk factor is Tobacco (Cigarette, Cigar, or Pipe).
  • In the Bahamas, a combination of Alcohol and Tobacco use is a more common risk factor.
  • The tongue is the most common site of oral cancer, especially the side of the tongue that is farthest back in the mouth.
  • The floor of the mouth is the next most common site, followed by the inside of the cheek.
  • Self examination of the mouth and tongue is advised, but seeing your dentist every six months is the best method for detection of oral cancer.

    Warning signs of oral cancer are:
  • White lesions or sores in the mouth that do not heal.
  • Red lesions or sores in the mouth that do not heal.
  • Persistent sore throat.
  • Difficulty with chewing or swallowing.
  • Ill-fitting Dentures?
  • Early detection is the best way to ensure successful treatment of oral cancer.
  • Prevention can best be achieved by avoiding the risk factors of tobacco and alcohol consumption.
